Genji is one of Sendai’s most beloved traditional izakayas, founded back in 1950.
Tucked away in Bunka Yokocho, an atmospheric alley in central Sendai, this wooden establishment has preserved the charm of old Japan — and even withstood the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
The interior is built entirely from dark-stained wood, and the dim lighting adds to its nostalgic, calming atmosphere.
(Admittedly, my photos turned out a bit grainy because of the low light — apologies!)
One of the unique customs here:
Every drink you order comes with a small seasonal dish.
And every one of them is delicious.
If you’re looking to experience authentic postwar Japan, and enjoy a quiet drink in a place full of history and character, Genji is a must-visit.
