Authentic Local Flavors at “Shunyū Ayura” in Ōtsu(旬遊 あゆら)

izakaya

Located in the heart of Ōtsu City, just a short walk from JR Ōtsu Station, Shunyū Ayura is a cozy izakaya known for its refined take on local Shiga cuisine.

Housed in a renovated townhouse, the warm wooden interior and relaxed atmosphere make it feel like dining in a traditional Japanese home. Whether you’re looking for an intimate dinner or a group gathering, this spot offers both counter and private room seating.

Ayura serves seasonal Japanese dishes using local ingredients—standouts include Ōmi beef, funazushi (fermented carp), and an impressive selection of regional sake. Everything is thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and deeply flavorful.

The exterior has such a charming and elegant presence.

The deep-fried taro was incredibly tasty.

The octopus tempura, made with fresh raw octopus, was so tender it melted in my mouth—even more impressive than the raw octopus zangi I had in Sapporo!

The seared Omi beef yukhoe was also outstanding—one of the best Omi beef dishes I’ve ever had.

This restaurant was an absolute gem.

With such amazing food, both the sake and my chopsticks just kept going.

The lively local Kansai dialect (maybe Shiga dialect?) from the table behind me made me feel I was truly somewhere far from home.

🍶 “A true hidden gem where you can taste the depth of Shiga’s food culture in a serene, nostalgic setting.”

Perfect for travelers seeking an authentic izakaya experience in Shiga.
